Central High School

Great things are happening at our neighborhood public high school, Central (THE) High School. CHS has recently received a wonderful commitment to improve the academic programs and aesthetics of the 106 year old building. We are currently experiencing renovations beginning with the auditorium which will get a total overhaul so that our choirs, orchestras, bands, and theater students can perform in a new setting! Our Science labs have been gutted and will be totally updated. Library tables are being replaced and the audio/visual system will be upgraded. Gracious donations from CHS alums and parent groups have provided landscaping improvements and exterior upgrades to the building. Thanks to School Board Commissioner Caldwell (and CHS parent) we have secured funding for the installation of an irrigation system to keep all of our new landscaping alive and beautiful.

The fabulous CHS band, who you may have seen marching through the neighborhood during homecoming celebrations, won first place in a national competition this fall. The band would like to thank all of our wonderful Central Garden neighbors who came out to wave and cheer them on. The CHS girls swim team won first place in the Memphis City Schools championship meet in January and the girls’ basketball team made it to the state championships! On the academic front our dual enrollment Anatomy students visited the labs at Le Bonheur in what is the first of many collaborations with local hospitals. Students learned about oxygen output during exercise among other things! Our US History Department brought a World War II trunk from the Smithsonian to the school and students got to handle and study many artifacts from that era which they are studying in class. Our students are participating in many extracurricular activities as well. Our wonderful CHS Green Club runs the school recycling program and keeps the grounds neat and clean. Many of our students are traveling to Italy over Spring Break to tour and learn about that country. Finally, our orchestra students, choir students, and band students participated in Tennessee All West competitions this winter and many earned places in the All West performance groups.

Great things truly are happening at your neighborhood public high school. We welcome our neighbors on campus where there are many opportunities to volunteer. Thank you for your continued support of our historic school!
