Central Gardens Association's Halloween Funds & Food Drive for Mid-South Food Bank

The Shelby County Health Department released guidance for Halloween. Gatherings and events, like parties, carnivals, festivals and haunted houses, are not permitted, even if they are outdoors. However, some of these events are okay with advanced SCHD approval of site-specific plans. Door-to-door trick-or-treating isn’t recommended.

Because many of our neighbors will not be participating in trick-or-treating this year, in lieu of buying candy, please consider making a donation to Mid-South Food Bank. Beginning on Monday, October 19, CGA will be hosting a neighborhood Funds & Food Drive for Mid-South Food Bank. In the two weeks leading up to Halloween, CGA will be reaching out to neighbors and asking them to assist those in our community who are struggling during this difficult time.

We will have two drop-off dates for food collection. You can drop off food on Saturday, October 24 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. and on Halloween, October 31 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. in the parking lot of Immaculate Conception Cathedral at 1695 Central Ave.

We are also encouraging monetary donations. $1 = 3 Meals! All money from food drives is used to purchase nutritious food and is used to help those struggling with food insecurity in Mid‐South Food Bank's 31‐county service area in west Tennessee, north Mississippi and east Arkansas. We prefer online donations but if you are donating by check, please make checks payable to Mid-South Food Bank.

If you are planning to donate food on the drop off dates, please stick to dry and canned food donations. Any food that is “shelf-stable” or nonperishable – you can keep it in your pantry and it won’t go bad - will be accepted (no glass containers). And remember, only donate food that hasn’t reached its “sell-by” date yet. Items such as:

  • Peanut butter

  • Canned soup

  • Canned fruit and 100% fruit juice

  • Canned vegetables

  • Canned stew

  • Canned fish

  • Canned beans

  • Pasta (prefer whole grain)

  • Rice (prefer brown rice)
